10 Shocking Ingredients in Your Food: What to Know Before Your Next Trip to the Grocery Store

Updated: Sep 16, 2024

Food is the most important source of nutrition and health. It depends on what you put in your body. Pursuing a healthy diet seems like a simple thing to do, but food companies trick you so much  that it's hard to know what's healthy and what's unhealthy. Walking the shelves of your local grocery store, you'll be inundated with thousands of clever marketing tactics.

Food companies want you to buy their products, and they actively try to mislead you by making you believe their foods are healthier than they actually are.

We see products proudly advertising "organic," "trans fat free," "all natural," "gluten free," "fat free," and  many other seemingly healthy terms. Consumers are often unaware that they are purchasing foods that are harmful to their health. "It's organic, so it must be healthy," you might think, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. Food companies don't care about you The sooner you realize this, the better.

Food companies don't care about your health.

You are interested in making money. Companies change their marketing to keep up with consumer trends and demands, but they don't always change much about how food is processed and produced. They  also make every effort to hide unhealthy ingredients from you. To make matters worse, the FDA allows this. They also allow numerous food additives that are known to cause serious health problems. Want to know something else that's crazy? The FDA  doesn't even require a list of chemical contaminants (like rocket fuel).

Sound crazy right?

There are so many unsafe food additives whose names mislead the uninformed consumer. Knowing this, the supermarket suddenly becomes a landmine, rather than a source of nutrition and health.

You have no idea what you're putting into your body or feeding your family.

No wonder there are so many serious health problems in this country. Even if you shop in the organic/natural/whole foods section of your local grocery store, you need to be careful. Of course, there are many better options out there, but these departments also contain a lot of highly processed foods that aren't as healthy as you  think.

You need to be very careful when buying packaged foods. Read the label carefully.

Here are the 10 dangerous ingredients to watch out for:

1. Sodium Nitrate: Sodium nitrate is an additive used as a preservative. It's found in sausages, hot dogs, bacon and other processed meat products. Studies have linked sodium nitrate to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, neurological disorders and gastrointestinal disorders. If you eat meat, stick to lean, fresh meats and limit or avoid meats that contain sodium nitrate.

 2. Azodicarbonamide: Azodicarbonamide is an industrial chemical  used in making rubber and synthetic leather. It makes things spongy, so at some point someone had the  idea to add it to bread to make it spongy. It is also used to lighten grain flour. It is banned in Europe and Australia, although the FDA claims  there is not enough research to determine the dangers of exposure to this chemical in food. The World Health Organization and  CDC list warnings for respiratory illness, skin and eye irritation, and recommend against use. Other sources have linked ingestion of this chemical to impaired hormone and immune function.

3. High Fructose Corn Syrup: This highly processed sweetener is linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It is often confusingly labeled as fructose syrup or fructose.

4.  Butylate hydroxytoluene (BHT):

A preservative found in many foods and cosmetics, BHT has been linked to cancer in animal studies. Although considered safe at low doses, its ubiquitous presence makes it difficult to assess overall exposure.

5. Nutrient-rich wheat flour: Lacking nutrients and fiber, nutrient-rich flour causes blood sugar levels to spike and increases the risk of diabetes and cancer. Choose whole grains for better health benefits.

6. Soybean Oil: Often genetically modified and linked to inflammation and digestive problems, it is best to choose organic and non-GMO soy products.

7. Monosodium glutamate (MSG):

This flavor enhancer has been linked to obesity, headaches, and other health problems. MSG should be eliminated from your diet.

8. Yellow 5 (Tartrazine): This food coloring additive has been linked to allergic reactions, hyperactivity, and cancer risk. Be wary of products containing artificial colors.

9. Propylene glycol alginate: Found in many foods and also a major ingredient in antifreeze, it has been linked to neurological and organ health risks.

10. Polysorbate 60:

Used as a thickener, its components have been linked to carcinogenesis and reproductive problems.

Solution: Focus on whole foods and smoothies.

Avoiding these harmful additives starts with choosing whole foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed meats are your best bets. Incorporating green smoothies into your diet can significantly increase your intake of healthy, whole foods. Smoothies are easy to make, affordable, and portable, making them a great choice for healthy eating on the go.
